Biological Dental Investigations

Biological Dental Investigations

This examination combines traditional dental diagnostics with ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern German Functional Medicine approaches. As an assessment, it was developed to ascertain the existence of any interconnectedness between one's current dental condition and general state of health. The objectives are to firstly, identify any relationships between dental and general health, then put these relationships in perspective to the general health, and finally, to offer suggestions as to courses of action to rectify the situation. The BDI is diagnostic and informative in nature, and treatment is referred to your own dentist with specific suggestions and protocols and, most often, with a compatibility suggestion for materials if dental work is indicated (compatibility is usually a seperate test).

The teeth are not only connected to the body physically, but also energetically via the nervous system as well as to the acupuncture meridians. As such, the teeth can effect the state of functioning of the organs and vice versa. Such relationships are well established and imbalances can be identified using various techniques of electro-acupuncture diagnostics (which does not involve any needles!) and autonomic nervous system testing developed in Germany over the last 50 years.

The reactivity of the body to dental materials already in place can also be determined, as can the electrical currents and charges that can develop through an electrogalvanic effect between dental material in the mouth. These can then be evaluated as to their importance or priority in relation to systemic (whole body) health. An impression of the body burden from such materials and effects may also be ascertained.

Other obvious dental implications come in the form of root canal treated teeth, extraction sites and non-symptomatic teeth which have become focal sources of energetic disturbance or toxins from bacterial cultures and tissue breakdown. In addition, the occlusal (bite related) impacts can also be evaluated.

Techniques utilized are typically non-invasive and include the above mentioned electrodermal autonomic reflex tests, conventional tests and may require Computerized Regulation Thermography (CRT). X-rays are not usually taken, but it is very helpful if you can bring your own along with you for the appointment. If not, we will attempt to borrow them from your dentist's office.

Expect to spend aproximately 2 hours at your intital visit as there is a good bit of explanation about the theory and scientific basis behind this type of examination. A written report, outlining the findings and potential approaches for treatment, is generally provided to you, your dentist and your principle care-giver after your appointment.
